Must-Have Books for Book Lover's Day

Writer's picture: Ashley BurgessAshley Burgess

It is "Book Lover's Day," so what more appropriate post than to discuss just a few of my favorites! As a busy mom, I don't always have time to read, nor do I want to read the things my children want to read. (guilty of wanting something more than just a picture book or short stories with nothing that relates to me.)

You know, reading can be a great way to gain more knowledge, separate yourself from the real world, or to just get away for a little bit- all of which I'm a big fan of. Even though I don't always have the time I'd like to have, I still try to set a good example for my kids who absolutely hate reading. I can't say I blame them... the only reason I got started reading so heavily at such a young age was the fact that I'm an intensely competitive person who just wanted to win her name on a star in the school library! Does anyone else remember Accelerated Reader (AR) points?

I don't have a preference on one specific genre, so you'll find a little of this and a little of that sprinkled throughout these recommendations with the hopes that at least one will tickle your fancy.

First up, my current indulgence- The First Day of Spring by Nancy Tucker. This falls more in the thriller/ horror style genre. When a young girl goes through something traumatizing, yet somehow manifests itself into power at a young age, is she going to be able to run from it as an adult? If you have a special place in your heart for children, understand some basic psychology and trauma responses, and love to have a book make your heart race, this is a great read!

Next, I thoroughly enjoy Unf*ck Your Brain by Faith G. Harper, PhD, LPC-S, ACS, CAN. I've always been the type of person who wants to understand the "why" behind everything. Much to my parents' demise, I never grew out of the habit of asking the question to anything I was told. This book breaks down the science of understanding where mental illnesses such as addiction, anxiety, depression, anger issues, etc come from and scientifically proven methods that can help you recognize and begin treating them yourself. Like many of you, I experience some of these issues, and for others like me who want to understand "WHY," you'll find that and the help you're looking for in this book.

Here's a good one for the ladies! Come As You Are by Emily Nagoski studies the female body, sexual health, and sexuality. It helps provide women with the knowledge they need to feel empowered in their own bodies and the book is updated with new revisions/ editions as the science industry establishes new information!

This one right here!!! I wish I could type a bunch of "clap" emojis here for you to stress how much I love this one! Female Rage by Mary Valentis and Anne Devane is a book that uses examples such as the myth of Medusa to confront rage head on. They really grab this issue by the horns in this relatable book to all women. It is a must read to help address your true feminine anger and harness the power!

And last, but not least, Life's Golden Ticket by Brendon Burchard. Not only is the author absolutely brilliant (seriously, you should read all of his books and available content), but this book spins the tale of restarting life, both literally and metaphorically, so carefully woven together that you feel like a brand new person once you've finished reading it!

Did any of my suggestions strike you as interesting? Do you have any similar recommendations or must-read's on your list to share? Let's hear all the thoughts and suggestions!
